A 20-year-old woman died while kayaking in the River Tees near Barnard Castle, County Durham. Her body was recovered on Saturday afternoon following a major search operation involving multiple emergency services.

Durham Constabulary confirmed that emergency crews were called just before 2pm on Saturday to reports of a kayaker in difficulty. The woman's body was recovered just after 4pm.

The North East Ambulance Service dispatched significant resources to the scene. A spokesperson said: «We received a call at 1.50pm on Saturday, November 15 to reports of a person in water in the Lartington area of Barnard Castle. We dispatched two ambulance crews, a clinical team leader, a duty officer, three crews from our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), and requested support from our colleagues at the the mountain rescue team and the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) who attended by road and air.»

The search involved firefighters, paramedics, police, the Coastguard, and the Teesdale and Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue Team. The Great North Air Ambulance Service attended by both road and air.

Durham Constabulary confirmed that the woman's family has been informed. «Her family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers,» a police spokesperson said.
